The hórreo was born to store and air grain, raising it off the ground and protecting it from damp and rodents. Its form is entirely shaped by that function.
It rests on granite feet topped with «tornarratos» (staddle stones), and its latticed walls let air circulate inside the chamber.
Building a granite hórreo means adjusting every piece by hand to achieve a perfect fit. Restoring one requires respecting the original technique.
Today the hórreo is also an element of great aesthetic value for estates and gardens — a piece of living heritage.
